Installation Guide for Saab car mirror
Read this page and learn how to install your Saab car or Truck mirror glass only product
Its always such a hassle when you break your Saab side view mirror. I myself have hit many a mailbox in my day that cracked the car mirror or the mirror assembly. Lots of people think they have to go to the Saab dealership to get the whole assembly. In some cases you have to, but most of the time its just the glass itself that is broken. Why spend $550.00 dollars and up to have it replace the assembly by the dealer or a when you can fix it yourself easily and affordably.
Did you ever notice the Saab passenger side mirror always has the "objects are closer" text on the mirror. This mirror is designed this way to increase your field of vision and to eliminate the blind spot problem. Its always a good thing to replace that with a convex mirror glass verses a normal mirror. Don't substitute this as one day it might save your life.
An Saab glass only side view mirror is made of 2.2mm 1st surface mirror properties. This mirror is actually translucent. Meaning that light will travel through and absorb the light from the car behind you at night. USA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Code 571.111 require this mirror to absorb 40 to 60 percent of light and convex mirror with a specific bend. However during the day during, the mirror is 100% reflective. We only sell mirrors that conform with DOT standards. Our mirrors are made in the USA, and all comply to US Standards. Beware of the 9 dollar mirror that you are seeing on sale these days on the internet, as these mirrors might not conform to USA standards. Car or Truck mirrors should be installed using the car mirror to a plastic frame plate. Without this plastic frame the glass has nothing to rest into the car mirror housing. We do not suggest the use of normal bathroom silicone adhesive, which everyone has laying around at somewhere in their house or apartment. Latex type silicone does not adhere well to glass, but does to the plastic frame. We suggested using a construction silicone which is non latex based. If you don't have any then get a small tube at your local hardware store, or order the tube online with us.

In the last 15 years, we have been selling a lot of mirrors that the glass has fallen out of the frame for no reason. One of the biggest problems cars has been the Saab 9-3 9-5. There are another 20 or 30 makes and models that has had this problem in recent years. Right now you are seeing a black pad. The manufacture of this product used a Mylar black pad, to separate the glass from the heating element on your vehicle. Most side view mirrors are glued to the frame that is attached motor using automotive silicone, acrylic glue or urethane. Behind this black pad is a heating element. In the past, many European car manufactures did not use first surface chromium mirror, and those mirrors. which we think is aluminum oxide would turn brown due to absorption of the heating element which burns the mirror glass. So they tried to fix the problem, however your mirror was glued to the black Mylar pad using a rubber based spray adhesive. So a good idea, that now has gone bad.
How to properly Glue this mirror back into the frame.
1. You have to first clean the surface of the black pad. Being contaminated by the previous adhesive, it needs to be removed. We suggest the use of a WET RAG and the use of NAIL POLISH REMOVER to clean any debris, black flakes, and residue. This will insure the automotive silicone that we suggest you use to adhere the mirror to the glass. Nail Polish remover contains 10% acetone which will clean it most efficiently. DO NOT USE ANY FORM OF SCRAPING DEVICE as you will damage the heating element behind the black pad.
2. You now need to glue the mirror to the frame. We sell the silicone for this mirror. You can find it in the additional items to order list. If however you have a non latex silicone (known as construction silicone) then yes, you can use your product. To help the heating element to function properly, we suggest dotting the black pad with the silicone starting at the center, every 1/4 x 1/4 inch 1/2 inch from the frame edge. When placing the mirror into the frame these small beads of silicone will meet creating a silicone pad for the heat to absorb into the new mirror evenly. Like it did from the factory. The drying time at 70 deg. is 4 hours. Expect longer drying time as temperatures get lower. Do not think of using Crazy Glue, Gorilla glue. However if you are a glass shop or repair facility and have a primer less urethane, this is fine to use.
3. After install, get painters or masking tape, and tape the mirror to the plastic frame you placed the mirror in or to the housing shell. This will insure that the mirror will not fall out or shift during drying times. We do not recommend driving the car while the glue dries.

How to remove and replace your car mirror from the frame
Now how do you remove that old Saab mirror to get the new one in. Well, you first must breakdown the mirror from the plate called a frame. One simple way to do this is to get a flat strong instrument like a wide screw driver or a automotive scraper. Not many of you have the scraper, but when you go to our order form page we could sell you one. Its a nice thing to have around your toolbox. Now to loosen the adhesive from the plate you must apply some heat. Ideally a propane torch is good, but if you have the wife's hairdryer or a heat gun that will also work. Heat up the mirror enough so that the adhesive behind the Saab mirror will loosen get the screwdriver, putty knife, or the scraper under the mirror and pull all the broken pieces off the frame. Make sure you are wearing gloves and protective eyewear, oh, and its also a smart idea to put a small garbage bucket under the housing you are working on, so that the glass falls into the bucket and not on the ground. After the side view mirror glass is removed, make sure all the mirror and adhesive is clean off the framed plate.
Once you have removed your Saab side view mirror from the frame, you now need to apply the glue to the black frame. First thing to do is clean the glass with water. Do not use glass cleaner or any chemical related cleaner. Apply the glue outward so it extends past the lip of the frame. I call this the snow cone effect. Glue it in 5 spots. One in the middle and 4 in the middle corners. Don't get too close to the frames edge, as it will ooze out of the frame, making a mess. If you order the silicone from us or have purchased a tube, cut a 3/8 inch diameter from the tip. Use Large dabs of the adhesive 3/8" inch wide by 1/2" outwards. Remember you are not installing a windshield that requires a strong adhesive. Once you have adhered the mirror to the plate, get some easily removable tape, like masking tape, and tape the mirror around the mirror housing so that the mirror will not slide off the frame. This will also allow you to drive. Keep the tape on for 24 hours for cold climates and 5 hours in warm until the glue dries.
Installing a Electro chromatic Self Dimming Fit Over Car mirror
Many other car manufactures have created an electro chromatic also know as self dimming mirrors. In this option, the glass is actually a liquid that dims and heats the mirror. Due to the high costs of this mirror, we have the option of selling an electro chromatic fit over mirror. This is a mirror that fits over the old broken glass. The self dimming option will no longer function, but in most cases you will need to replace the whole housing in order to get your OEM product to work, and unfortunately almost all dealers only have the housing available for 300-500 dollars. Also in past years many made side view car mirrors that were electro chromatic using and electrical charge liquid or film. As year go by, they turned rust in color or black. So the fit over glass is an inexpensive option for these items, for at least until the junk yards have these in stock for a reasonable price. So be aware of this feature when you order. We do not sell a mirror that self dims. We do however sell mirrors that will fit over your existing self dimming mirror. For more information, please refer to the top of this page. To apply a self dimming mirror is simple. You DO NOT remove the old glass from the frame as these mirror are fused to the frame plate. When buying a self dimming fit over mirror from us, you should do the following. If you have a self dimming mirror that had liquid come out of the mirror when broken, please clean any oils and dirt from the outer surface and this will prevent the silicone to bond to the plastic. You must clean and remove any of the liquid that is on the outer portion of the existing mirror on the vehicle. This oil may contaminate the adhering process. Its best to use a power wash to clean the oil out of the frame. On the old mirror, take the silicone glue, and dot the old mirror every 1/4 x 1/4 inch 1/2 inch from the frames edge. Then take the new mirror place it over the old one, use an easily removable tape, and secure the mirror to the housing for drying. By doing this method, you have created a silicone pad between the two glasses. In many cases even thought the self dimming feature has failed, the heating element behind that mirror will still function, and by transferring the heat through the newly created silicone base onto the new mirror. If you have a self dimming mirror that had liquid come out of the mirror when broken, please clean any oils and dirt from the outer surface and this will prevent the silicone to bond to the plastic.
Gluing a mirror that has fallen out of the frame for no reason.
In the last 6 or 7 years, we have been selling a lot of mirrors that the glass has fallen out of the frame for no reason. One of the biggest problems cars has been the Saab 93 95. There are another 20 or 30 makes and models that has had this problem in recent years. There is a special way to re glue this mirror properly if you have a heating element option. For some reason, the manufacture of these product either used a small amount of double sided tape, but the main culprit with mirrors with heating elements is the use of spray adhesive onto a black pad. Behind this black pad is a heating element. If you have this situation, please refer to the installation of Installing a Electro chromatic self dimming mirror installation. It is the same principle. By dotting the glue, as explained above, your mirrors heating function will work much better than just globing the glue onto the frame. It will disperse the heat from the element that is behind the black pad. The silicone that we sell is perfect in adhering this mirror properly. I have enclosed a picture of a mirror that the glass fell out of the frame, that had the black pad, and the heating element is behind the black pad. Again. Do not remove this black pad. Glue the black pad by dotting the pad with the silicone by doting the glue every 1/4 x 1/4 inch 1/2 inch from the frame edge. The same way you would the self dimming mirror. What this does is disperse the heat from behind the black pad, which is a heating element evenly to your new mirror. This way y our Saab 9-3, 9-5's heating element will work properly. Also, there was a problem on both sides. When ordering a Drivers side Saab Mirror, check the passenger side, or vice versa. Yes...that mirror is ready to fall out as well. You can do this by gently pushing on the mirror or getting a pen cap and get it underneath the mirror edge and pull on it. If you notice it starting to move, then go in a clock wise or counter clockwise around the frame lip, but be prepared for it to fall into your hand and out of the frame. I strongly suggest when ordering this mirror, you should order the glue as well. Our silicone will bond to the black pad permanently by using the system stated above. Although the spec's of the glue is a non latex silicone. If you have this product in your house, then by all means you do not need to order it from us. The other name for the automotive silicone is construction silicone
